RESTLESS: A sexy tale of spies, love and betrayal
Sundance Channel is pleased to announced our newest scripted project: RESTLESS, a two-part original miniseries slated to premiere in December and starring Hayley Atwell (above; CAPTAIN AMERICA), Rufus Sewell (Pillars of the Earth), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Michael Gambon (Page Eight) and Charlotte Rampling (MELANCHOLIA). Celebrated contemporary British novelist William Boyd penned both the book and the script, which depicts the thrilling story of a daughter who discovers that her mother was recruited as a spy during World War II.
What becomes of your life when everything you thought was certain turns out to be a fantastically complicated lie? That’s just what happens to Ruth Gilmartin (Dockery) when, one day in 1976, her mother, Sally (Rampling), suddenly tells her she has been living a double life. She is in fact Eva Delectorskaya, a spy for the British Secret Service who has been on the run for 30 years.
Her story begins in Paris in 1939. Eva (Atwell), a beautiful Russian émigrée, is recruited by Lucas Romer (Sewell), an alluring Englishman. As he trains her to become the perfect spy, their love affair begins. But when a crucial mission collapses and Eva finds herself in jeopardy, she knows she has no option but to run and hide.
Thirty years later, the only man who can bring her out of hiding is her former lover and spymaster, Lucas, now Baron Mansfield of Hampton Cleeve (Gambon). It’s the final chapter of an epic story of love, the duplicity and betrayal is about to end — and who will pay the greatest price remains to be seen.
RESTLESS will be produced by Emmy Award winner Hilary Bevan Jones (STATE OF PLAY) and directed by acclaimed theater and television director Edward Hall (MI-5).
This production announcement follows a busy year for Sundance Channel in the scripted arena. TOP OF THE LAKE, from Jane Campion and starring Elisabeth Moss and Holly Hunter, is currently in production in New Zealand. Sundance Channel has also greenlit its first wholly owned production, RECTIFY, from the producers of Breaking Bad and Oscar winner Ray McKinnon. Earlier this year, Sundance Channel received Golden Globe and SAG nominations for the scripted miniseries APPROPRIATE ADULT; the network’s first scripted project, CARLOS, won the Golden Globe for Best Mini-Series in 2011.
