In Behind The Scenes: Orange is the New Black, our panel discussion, moderated by journalist Andrea Mandell, centers on how a show featuring gender, race and sexual minorities became such a juggernaut cultural phenomenon. Jenji Kohan, the show’s creative visionary, acknowledges that rapid fan support and enthusiasm has helped propel the show to its success. Kohan adds that the show benefited from its entire season release on Netflix because fans could immerse themselves in the world more fully, though it did create some questions about narrative pacing.  Diversity, a central theme of the show, is reflected in our Behind The Scenes panel itself—“Look at how many women are up here,” Kohan says (in reference to 12 out of the 14 panelists). To that, the audience goes wild.
