Jesus Christ Superstar
After its success as the top LP album of 1971 and a popular run on Broadway, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's rock opera retelling of the last days of Christ came to the screen in 1973. Ted Neeley (an understudy for the Broadway production) plays the title role under Norman Jewison's direction. Costarring are the album's original Mary Magdalene, Yvonne Ellman, and Broadway veteran Carl Anderson as a charismatic Judas. “Bright and sometimes breathtaking … a Biblical movie with dignity” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times.
