Daniel Leconte’s invaluable documentary looks at free speech, censorship, secularism and assimilation in contemporary Europe by focusing on the 2007 civil trial of a French satirical magazine accused of racism for publishing satirical images of the prophet Mohammad. Still experiencing the affects of colonialism, European followers of Islam often complain of feeling marginalized, humiliated and being relegated to second-class citizens. Yet their heartfelt plea to be treated like everyone else prompts a very surprising defense in court.
