Sundance Watch List: Elizabeth Olsen

Interesting celebrity-sibling fact: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s younger sister, Elizabeth Olsen, is starring in not one but two films premiering at the Sundance Film Festival this month.

In writer/director Sean Durkin’s MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, the 21-year-old actress (a graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts and the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School in New York), plays a young woman who escapes from an abusive cult and moves in with her older sister -– only to be haunted by memory and plagued by paranoia. The depth Olsen brings to her portrayal has prompted comparison to a young Maggie Gyllenhaal.

And apparently not one for lighthearted romantic-comedies, Olsen will also star in Chris Kentis and Laura Lau’s SILENT HOUSE, a psychological thriller from the people who brought us the scary/suspenseful shark film OPEN WATER, which debuted at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. SILENT HOUSE, filmed in one continuous camera shot, will chart the increasing distress of a young woman, played by Olsen, trying to break out of an ever-deepening nightmare. The film was just added to the lineup last week as part of the Park City at Midnight program.

With two intense roles in films set to screen in Sundance, some critics are predicting that Olsen is “poised for a breakout.”
