Ed Helms, Now and Then

“Is it too early to declare 2011 as the year of Ed Helms?” wonders the Hollywood Reporter, citing the former Daily Show correspondent’s first starring role in the warmly received comedy CEDAR RAPIDS, which just debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as roles in the forthcoming HANGOVER sequel and what is sure to be more screen time on NBC’s The Office after Steve Carell leaves the show in the spring.

The question is fully justified, which makes all the sweeter Helms’ recollection, in an interview with ABC News, of his first Sundance Film Festival: “My first Sundance was actually pretty special. I was a senior in college and a huge film nerd,” Helms said. “My buddy and I came to Sundance and we didn’t have any money and we stayed in a Motel 6 at Park City and worked as parking attendants so we could sneak into movies. That buddy that I came here with was Marc Webb, who went on to direct (500) DAYS OF SUMMER and is directing the next SPIDER-MAN. That trip, with Marc, when we were 20 years old was formative. We just hurled ourselves into it with a real kind of reckless abandon.”
