This week, we’re featuring three genre-bending films determined to confound and stupify even as they make you laugh and cry. The one thing they have in common: all turn convention on its head in the name of telling a deeply personal story about human relationships.
The world of film is changing. For one thing, there’s not much actual film anymore. The future is digital; more and more, it’s streaming on our computers, too. Every week in Watch This Now, we survey the landscape of online movies to bring you a snapshot of what’s available. This week, the end is nigh — whatever nigh means — as we watch some end-of-the-world movies.
The world is coming to an end. Not in a vague, one-of-the-days sort of way; this is definitive and precise and all too soon. What do you do? The possibility of the end of the world looms over many science-fiction films; the aftermath of the end of the world is the focus of even more. But a smaller and more thoughtful subset approach the apocalypse from this unusual angle. The only race against time in movies like these has nothing to do with blowing up asteroids or defusing a doomsday bomb; it’s just that all too familiar urge to do all the things you’ve ever wanted to do before it’s all over. So what would you do if the end was coming? Personally, I’d make some reservations at Per Se before they all get snatched up.

Lars von Trier’s thoughts on making MELANCHOLIA are so stream-of-conscious and disjointed they’re almost incoherent, but it’s still his ‘official’ statement – and really, would you expect anything else of him?
It was like waking from a dream: my producer showed me a suggestion for a poster. “What is that?” I ask. ”It’s a film you’ve made!” she replies. “I hope not,” I stammer. Trailers are shown … stills … it looks like shit. I’m shaken.
Don’t get me wrong … I’ve worked on the film for two years. With great pleasure. But perhaps I’ve deceived myself. Let myself be tempted. Not that anyone has done anything wrong … on the contrary; everybody has worked loyally and with talent toward the goal defined by me alone. But when my producer presents me with the cold facts, a shiver runs down my spine…
Though Lars von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA doesn’t come out in wide release until November 11, 2011, the anticipation for his seemingly more accessible follow-up to 2009′s ANTICHRIST is mounting. (For me, it’s the combination of the end-of-the-world theme/people looking up at outer space in wonder, the mystery of melancholia and my girl crush, Charlotte Gainsbourg.)
