Q&A With Sebastian Junger

Q&A With Sebastian Junger

DreamStates: Sebastian Junger Animation by Cole Gerst

Sebastian Junger is busy on a book tour promoting his book WAR, now in paperback. The author and filmmaker took time from his busy schedule to chat with me about his Dreamstates episode, seen above.

How were you first approached to take part in DreamStates?

I was told about it by National Geographic. I thought it was a cool idea.

Did you collaborate at all with the illustrator? If so, in what ways?

No I did not. And I think he did a fantastic job! I absolutely loved what he created. It was such a cool experience watching my own dream portrayed visually. It was very cool.

Was there anything that he got 100% right, spot on?

Well I think the characterization of the expanding cartoon monsters was perfect. He really nailed it. It was really spot on.

You said this dream marked a time where you grew up. Have you had other dreams, like or unlike this one, that have repeated or have impacted you?

I mean every once in a while we all have dreams that are devastating. Nothing ever like that though. Nothing with a complete sense of doom and helplessness. It was really a classic midlife issue.

How old were you?

I was 46.

DreamStates: Sebastian Junger Animation by Cole Gerst

Sebastian Junger is an American author, journalist, and documentarian, most famous for the best-selling book The Perfect Storm, his award-winning chronicle of the war in Afghanistan in the 2010 movie RESTREPO, and his 2010 book War. Restrepo won the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the 2011 Academy Award for Best Documentary. Sebastian co-directed RESTREPO with photo journalist Tim Hetherington, who was killed while on assignment in Misrata, Libya in April 2010.

Sebastian’s dream story for our new web series DreamStates was quite intense. In his dream, he recalls how, while embedded with troops in Afghanistan, his “dream state and reality would often get blended together”. In this very profound dream – Sebastian and his “older brother” are being attacked by incredibly evil and violent “bubble monsters” that just keep coming and won’t stop – with no end in sight. Very scary stuff.

Sundance Channel teamed up with creative agency, Option-G, for the new collaborative animated video series, DreamStates. The series includes interviews with musicians Questlove (The Roots) and Mike Gordon (Phish), actor/comedian Will Forte (Saturday Night Live), actress Malin Akerman (WATCHMEN, COUPLES RETREAT) and writer/documentarian Sebastian Junger (THE PERFECT STORM/RESTREPO).

The bassist/vocalist for the band Phish, Mike Gordon is also a multi-instrumentalist and filmmaker. In 1983, he formed the band Phish along with guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth and drummer Jon Fishman. On his own, Gordon has an inclination toward bluegrass and folk music and plays a variety of instruments including guitar, banjo, and piano. An avid filmmaker and photographer, Gordon has shot music videos for Phish and directed the 2000 feature film Outside Out. He released his debut solo album, Inside In, in 2003. Green Sparrow followed in 2008 and Moss in 2010. Mike has kept a dream journal since 1977 and had so many dreams to talk about it was hard to pick just one for our new video series DreamStates. The DreamStates series takes a look into our dreams through the eyes of creative innovators from the worlds of music and film. In Mike Gordon’s episode of DreamStates, Mike discusses how sometimes when playing live – he gets to a “place” that connects him to one of his “night dreams” and he’ll literally see a “vision” from a recurring dream. Intense.

Dreaming with Malin Akerman: Go Towards The Light

DreamStates: Malin Akerman Animation by //kneeon

Malin Akerman is a Swedish-Canadian film actress and model. She has appeared in such films as Watchmen, The Heartbreak Kid, 27 Dresses, Couples Retreat, The Proposal and The Romantics. She is featured in the upcoming film Bang Bang Club about combat photographers and will also star opposite Tom Cruise in the film adaptation of Rock of Ages.

Malin took the time to sit down with us for an interview for our new animated web series, DreamStates, talking about a very disturbing dream she had. DreamStates takes a look into our dreams through the eyes of creative innovators from the worlds of music and film. In Malin’s dream she hears her mother get killed and is then stabbed by the killer until “everything goes black”. After “awakening” – she is faced with the choice of saying goodbye to her father or heading towards the “light”. Along the way she gets some help and guidance from old family and friends. Scary.

Questlove is an American drummer, DJ, music journalist and record producer. He is best known as the drummer for the Grammy Award-winning band The Roots, which is now the in-house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He has produced for artists such as Common, D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Jay-Z, Nikka Costa and more recently, Al Green, Amy Winehouse and John Legend. He’s also featured in our new animated web series, DreamStates, talking about his crazy, bizarre recurring dream. DreamStates takes a look into our dreams through the eyes of creative innovators from the worlds of music and film. In Questlove’s dream he is watching himself on a movie screen while he waits for a train at 30th St. Station in Philly, worries about failing out of school and is plagued with the daunting task of coming up with a new theme song and animation to Soul Train. What? We can’t make this up. Check it out.

A Q&A with Will Forte – Part 2

A Q&A with Will Forte – Part 2

To celebrate the launch of DreamStates, last week I got on a call with Will Forte while he drove to Mt. Rushmore. We discussed puffins, SNL, and of course, his dreams. Part One was yesterday. Part Two is below.

You’re not on SNL anymore?

I left SNL in the summer and moved back to Los Angeles.

But you were just on this past weekend with Elton John?

Just for that sketch. That was so exciting to have Tom Hanks play my brother. He is so fun to be around.

Are you working on new movies?

I just got done with a movie Tim and Eric. It is called Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie. I was in Palm Springs wearing a moustache. I love wearing a mustache.

Will Forte: Orgies and Dreams

Will Forte: Orgies and Dreams

Will Forte is an actor, comedian and writer best known as a cast member on Saturday Night Live and for starring in the SNL spin-off film, MACGRUBER. Will is now starring in the new film A GOOD OLD FASHIONED ORGY, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and he’s also a featured artist in our new animated video series DreamStates. You can also check out Will in his recurring roles on 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, Parks and Recreation and Conan. He’s everywhere!

DreamStates takes a look into our dreams through the eyes of creative innovators from the worlds of film and music. In Will’s episode of DreamStates, he is being relentlessly chased by a giant Icelandic puffin. For those of you not in the know – puffins “kind of look a little like a penguin crossed with a toucan…..but they have a dark side to them…….and they can be a little snippy”. This snippy, giant puffin chases Will from the big city to the ski slopes of Squaw Valley and never backs off until they finally meet up face to face. What does all this mean? We don’t know – but it’s fun to watch.

A Q&A with Will Forte – Part 1

To celebrate the launch of DreamStates, last week I got on a call with Will Forte while he drove to Mt. Rushmore. We discussed puffins, SNL, and of course, his dreams. Part One is today. Part Two will post tomorrow.

Hi Will.

Hi! I apologize in advance as I am 7 miles from Mt. Rushmore. I’d pull off but I think the park is closing soon! So this is the best time to interview me. I am so energized about getting to Mt. Rushmore. It’s taken me 40 years to get to this part of the country so I just had to get to see Mt. Rushmore.

I was just in Iceland last week and your DreamStates episode is all about puffins. So it’s appropriate we’re talking. I assume Iceland is where you came in contact with puffins?

Yes. Yes that is where. I went to a festival there and it was a weekend long event that was amazing. During this festival whole families stay up the entire night and there were puffins all over the island I was on. So we saw these puffins everywhere and then at night all around the tents people would be snacking on puffins! And I was a little sad as they seem like these cute birds. But then I heard they had a nasty side.

So you didn’t come in contact with their nasty side? It was all second hand information?

Yes, it was all second hand.

Have you seen the YouTube video of Gordon Ramsey catching puffins and snapping their necks?

No, puffins!?

Yes, if you Google “eating puffins” you’ll find this video of Ramsey catching puffins in nets and then snapping their necks!

No wonder they have this bad attitude. They’ve gotta have this attitude to survive.
