Hollywood is, as the cliche goes, a dream factory, and Freudian analysts and movie theorists alike have compared movie-watching to dreaming. The list of memorable dream movies could go on practically ad infinitum, but here is an eclectic list of 10 of the greatest, ranging from movies with classic dream sequences to those that come seductively or unnervingly close to capturing the mood and logic of our dreams and nightmares.

We hate to admit it, but life is tough. To persevere, rise above and truly succeed, a very simple choice must be made every day: Am I going to do what it takes to take care of myself and those around me, or am I not? It may feel like that decision gets harder and harder in light of new challenges that present themselves day after day, but the choice always remains our own. The brand new Sundance Channel series GET TO WORK examines this process, following down-and-out unemployed citizens as they try to pick their lives back up, find work and unlock their forgotten potential.
DreamStates: Mike Gordon
Animation by : Bran Dougherty-Johnson
The bassist/vocalist for the band Phish, Mike Gordon is also a multi-instrumentalist and filmmaker. In 1983, he formed the band Phish along with guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth and drummer Jon Fishman. On his own, Gordon has an inclination toward bluegrass and folk music and plays a variety of instruments including guitar, banjo, and piano. An avid filmmaker and photographer, Gordon has shot music videos for Phish and directed the 2000 feature film Outside Out. He released his debut solo album, Inside In, in 2003. Green Sparrow followed in 2008 and Moss in 2010. Mike has kept a dream journal since 1977 and had so many dreams to talk about it was hard to pick just one for our new video series DreamStates. The DreamStates series takes a look into our dreams through the eyes of creative innovators from the worlds of music and film. In Mike Gordon’s episode of DreamStates, Mike discusses how sometimes when playing live – he gets to a “place” that connects him to one of his “night dreams” and he’ll literally see a “vision” from a recurring dream. Intense.
DreamStates: Malin Akerman Animation by //kneeon
Malin Akerman is a Swedish-Canadian film actress and model. She has appeared in such films as Watchmen, The Heartbreak Kid, 27 Dresses, Couples Retreat, The Proposal and The Romantics. She is featured in the upcoming film Bang Bang Club about combat photographers and will also star opposite Tom Cruise in the film adaptation of Rock of Ages.
Malin took the time to sit down with us for an interview for our new animated web series, DreamStates, talking about a very disturbing dream she had. DreamStates takes a look into our dreams through the eyes of creative innovators from the worlds of music and film. In Malin’s dream she hears her mother get killed and is then stabbed by the killer until “everything goes black”. After “awakening” – she is faced with the choice of saying goodbye to her father or heading towards the “light”. Along the way she gets some help and guidance from old family and friends. Scary.
Will Forte is an actor, comedian and writer best known as a cast member on Saturday Night Live and for starring in the SNL spin-off film, MACGRUBER. You can also check out Will in his recurring roles on 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, Parks and Recreation and Conan. He’s everywhere!
DreamStates takes a look into our dreams through the eyes of creative innovators from the worlds of film and music. In Will’s episode of DreamStates, he is being relentlessly chased by a giant Icelandic puffin. For those of you not in the know – puffins “kind of look a little like a penguin crossed with a toucan…..but they have a dark side to them…….and they can be a little snippy”. This snippy, giant puffin chases Will from the big city to the ski slopes of Squaw Valley and never backs off until they finally meet up face to face. What does all this mean? We don’t know – but it’s fun to watch.
What do you dream about? What’s that one dream story you’ll never forget? The one that’s “seared into your brain” forever. We all have them. Now, Sundance Channel takes a deeper look into our dreams through the eyes of creative innovators from the worlds of film and music. Created by Option-G, DreamStates is a five-part…
Freud, Schmroid. If you’re looking for a good book on the interpretation of dreams, check out the brand new one by our friend Lauri Loewenberg, the nicest dream interpreter you’ll ever meet! Dream On It: Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life (published by St. Martin’s Press) features hundreds of real dream interpretations and a comprehensive dream symbol dictionary to help you understand and make the most of your nocturnal visions, especially the sexy ones. There’s an entire chapter dedicated to sex dreams, which Lauri says are often “not about a physical union you want, but rather a psychological union you need!” There are 10 kinds of sex dreams; below are 5 of them; check out Dream On It for the other five archetypes (The Friend, The Same Gender, Oral Sex, Family Members, and Masturbation):
The Mystery Lover — This is the most common of all sex dreams. Many of us wonder if this dream is actually a glimpse of our soul mate who might be out there somewhere waiting for us. Alas, t’is not so. But what is so is that the unknown, faceless man or woman that often appears in our dreams does indeed hold significance….Our dreams have a cool way of showing us the different parts of our personality in the form of a person so we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and what makes us tick. That being said, the mystery lover in your dreams is the embodiment, the personification of the qualities we tend to associate with that gender….Throughout life we struggle to incorporate the right balance of each [gender] into our personalities and behavior. A man wants to be caring and understanding, yet he doesn’t want to be a sissy. A woman wants to assert herself, yet she doesn’t want to be labeled the B word! Our mystery lover dreams are guiding us towards that perfect balance of firm and gentle, bold and caring, yin and yang.
It’s a few months late, but here’s an easy button for the “IS THIS A DREAM?” sound from “Inception.” I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I can’t stop pushing it. It makes everything seem so dreamily dramatic. [Via]
