This week, Kathryn Bigelow takes us deep inside the Iraq War in THE HURT LOCKER, her tense Oscar-winning thriller that shows the chaos of that conflict. But don’t worry – if watching army grunts doing their army stuff isn’t your thing, we’ve also got Christian Bale’s major debut, Jake Gyllenhaal trying to catch an infamous criminal, and more!
DIARY OF A NYMPHOMANIAC
This week, we’ve got Tilda Swinton in a film literally for the ages. Also don’t miss Paul Newman and Tom Cruise partnering up with Martin Scorsese, Christian Bale going on a crash diet, and more.
This week’s theme is… nymphomania! Ok, so only two of our five featured films focus on characters who go beyond simple promiscuity, but that’s 50% more than a normal week. In addition, we’ve got Daniel Day-Lewis, Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and the story behind one of post-punk music’s biggest fallen icons. Unfortunately not all in the same film, but hey, you’ve got to pace yourself. We’ve got all week together.

If you spend a lot of time analyzing movie sex scenes like we do, you might find yourself rolling your eyes at how many onscreen couples manage to have sex without ever showing any skin… or who fall asleep with a sheet covering them just so… or who always put on a shirt and underpants when they get out of bed to pee, no matter how raunchy things just got. Where’s the nudity? Where’s the raunch? Well, if you’re looking to really steam things up this summer, check out the Hot Summer Nights series: every Friday and Saturday night in August, there is a triple bill of films designed to do just that, from Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN to DIARY OF A NYMPHOMANIAC. For further feverish research on your own time, you might want to look up the work of the following 10 directors who are very, shall we say, comfortable with onscreen nudity. And we mean the real kind — not the CGI kind. Only after we finished this list did we realize it was entirely male, which we suppose shouldn’t surprise us — after all, most of the nudity is female. But we dug up male nudity — or, at least, equal-opportunity nudity — where we could. You’re welcome!
Can you handle all this heat? No, seriously, can you? Because it’s not just the weather that’s hot — the movies on offer this week are seriously steamy, from the downright uncomfortable (DELIVERANCE) to the height of young lust (Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN).
Our Thriller Thursdays selection is John Boorman’s DELIVERANCE, with its dueling banjos, menacing hillbillies and all.
This week on Sundance Channel we’ve got milkshakes, nymphos, drag queens and terror plots. I really wish they were all wrapped up into one, amazing film. But, until I finish that screenplay, we’ve got to make do with four separate movies.
Ah, lovely, fragile February. While the groundhogs can’t seem to
