Chanel, Dior, Givenchy: Luxe and excess in Fall 2012 haute couture

Paris was once again the center of attention at the start of July for the presentation of the Fall 2012 couture shows. To even use the name in France, a designer must be vetted thoroughly by the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie de Paris, which is how the elegant pocket industry has managed to stay relevant (albeit sometimes teetering on the brink of extinction in this commercially driven world.) And this season’s collections produced a steady offering of meticulous — and excessive by nature — pieces sure to be circulating throughout Europe, Asia and the tonier cities of South America.

Cruise Control 2013: What they're wearing in Cannes

Article: Cruise Control 2013: What they're wearing in Cannes

How does one get to Cannes, Marseilles, or Moncaco? By yacht, of course. For the vast majority of people, this is a lofty prospect. But for the select few with the means (private jet, Maserati, large boat), the appropriate fashion is paramount. Fortunately there are visionaries in the world that still cater to the one percent of beautiful people in need of haute couture resort wear. Visionaries like Karl Lagerfeld, who seems to be getting more and more boisterous as he enters the new decade (shredding his more austere front), and Thomas Maier—who is still a fan of the quiet approach. While all eyes are on the Cannes, let’s take a peek at some of the fashions that will be all the planet’s most glamorous beaches over the next few months.

Summer fun in the hot city

With it being summer, I thought I’d put together a little cheat sheet about what’s hot in my imagination for this summer, my summer in the city.

Let’s face it, the last two years have been years of Gaga, but there is something so personal about her music and her style that inspires me every day. From the mini short clad dancers in her new “Alejandro” music video, to her whimsical display of her middle finger at major sporting events, there’s nothing not to love. Lady Gaga’s adoration for her fans is something that everyone who is blessed enough to have fans should learn from. There isn’t a morning, day or night in these hot months that I am not rocking my “Poker Face.”

Summer fashion isn’t always something that I go for, I have disproportionate leg muscles which can make shorts and issue, and my skin is paler than Casper’s, but I love letting some skin show and making my skinny rib statements on every hot, sticky, miserable day. Chanel has some amazing tanks from their summer collection, Garreth Pugh put out an insane pair of leather leggings for those frisky nights out grinding to the “thumpa thumpa” and J Brand has introduced “Jegging” shorts, which are basically denim inspired biker shorts that make my booty look glorious. I may prefer bundling up in fur for winter, but this summer there are a lot of hot things to try.

A Dilettante’s Dispatch: Chanel

Article: A Dilettante’s Dispatch: Chanel

A Dilettante’s Dispatch is a series of posts from a jet-setting friend of ours, Arturo. Watch for more in the coming days.

OMG, I forgot to mention in my last post that I saw Ewan McGregor — my number-one celebrity exception — at L’Eclairuer. Beautiful, and wisely checking out a pair of Rick Owens motorcycle boots. Unfortunately he was with his wife and children, and therefore unlikely to fall prey to my waning charms.

In any event, Chanel. I’m not going to review the fashion, as I’m hardly qualified, and I don’t want to piss anyone off…yet. That said, the clothes at Chanel were quite shiney and elaborate and seemed well positioned to appeal to rich ladies in Texas and Russia. (See if you can spot me in the crowd!)

Bag for the zeitgeist

This is an addendum to a luxury bag round up from back in April which included a Chanel bag designed to look like their shopping bag. Well here’s a do-it-yourself version that’s even more downtown and definitely more affordable that was spotted in the wild: As photographer Jerome succinctly summarized, “fake it till you make…
