Now Playing on Sundance Channel: TRIAD ELECTION, FISH TANK, THE CENTER OF THE WORLD
Autumn is now in full effect — the carefree days of summer are behind us and we’re left to ponder the oncoming cold and the meaning of our existence as we watch campaign ad after campaign ad. To us, that makes the season all about two things: complicated relationships… and elections. Thankfully, we’ve got the appropriate films for any occasion. We’re an all-season network!
Andrea Arnold’s Cannes Jury Prize-winning FISH TANK is a story of alienation and rebellion in the exurbs of London. Teenager Mia has lost herself in the downward spiral between her and her mother, getting herself kicked out of school and spending her days up to no good. When her mother shags up with a new man, Mia attempts to seduce him.

We can guess the pitch for this one: “INDECENT PROPOSAL meets PRETTY WOMAN”. Lonely Peter Sarsgaard offers an exotic dancer $10,000 to stay with him in a Vegas hotel, with the promise of erotic adventures but no actual sex. Will they stick to their own rules, or will a real connection develop? We know what Hollywood’s answer would be, but we like to give director Wayne Wang and writer Miranda July (among others) a little more credit for subtlety — so just watch and see what happens.

Election season’s in full swing… for leadership of the notorious Hong Kong gang known as the Triads, that is. There’s no electoral college to worry about for these guys; it’s all down to popular vote, and with gang members dropping like flies, every vote counts. Think our presidential campaign’s been a bloodbath? Well, these guys are some seriously tough debaters!
