5 girls so bad they're good

Talk about strong female characters who aren’t afraid to challenge notions of violence and femininity. In HARD CANDY, airing tonight at 10P, Ellen Page plays a 14-year-old vigilante who takes on a pedophile, messing with his head — and ours. We’re supposed to tell you violence won’t solve the world’s problems, but let’s be honest: Sometimes, payback’s a bitch. Here are five of our favorite film girls who are so bad, they’re good.

Hayley Stark, HARD CANDY
Sometimes, you need to take justice into your own hands. Hayley Stark does just that in the 2005 thriller HARD CANDY, based on stories about gangs of Japanese girls who lured businessmen to remote locations to rob them. Hayley, however, isn’t in it for the money, but for the satisfaction of protecting kids from pedophiles. Think of her as the female Dexter, a killer with a code; who says little girls are sugar and spice and everything nice?

Beatrix Kiddo, a.k.a. The Bride, KILL BILL
In what may be our favorite Uma Thurman role, The Bride goes on a blood- and violence-soaked revengefest that’s so action-packed, it requires two movies. Who can forget that iconic scene with the Crazy 88? Takeway: Don’t mess with Uma, people. She’ll take you to the cleaners. And then some.

One of the 20th century’s most controversial films opens with a deceptively simple scene: man and woman at a diner, woman dancing to the jukebox, rednecks getting frisky. It only goes downhill from there. NATURAL BORN KILLERS, while directed by Oliver Stone, has the trademark Tarantino violence, with a side of commentary on the mass media glorification of mass murderers.

Revenge is a way of life for the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and she’ll go to the limits to get her pound of flesh. Smart, savvy, and ruthless, Lisbeth lets no one stand in her way on her path to justice. She’s so bad, she got a book series and feature film adaptations in Sweden and the United States. Who knows where she’ll pop up next?

Domino Harvey, DOMINO
Model-turned-bounty-hunter Domino can strut a runway and wear a bandolier with equal ease — and she’ll do whatever she has to in order to get the job done. When she gets swept up in a bank robbery plot, Domino gets tangled with mafia bosses and the FBI in a furiously fast-paced movie about young lives lived hard and short.

Be sure to catch HARD CANDY tonight at 10P and tomorrow at 4A, for all you insomniacs out there!
