Punk pronouns: Against Me!'s lead singer transitioning from Tom to Laura

Sometimes I worry that we actually break the news here at SUNfiltered. No, it’s not that we’re the first, it’s that we write about things and then start off some sort of weird butterfly effect. Case in point? Just the other day we supplied you with a TRANSGENERATION primer on proper pronoun use and then Rolling Stone drops the story that Against Me! singer Tom Gabel has come out as transgender and is transitioning to life as Laura Jane Grace. On top of that, some publications got called out for not using Tom’s preferred pronoun ‘she’ in their coverage…and some, like The Independent, changed it!

Perhaps you’re not up on Against Me!, but the Florida punk band has had plenty of mainstream exposure. They’ve toured with the Foo Fighters, played on Letterman and been remixed by Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys. The full story hits newsstands on Friday and the excerpt makes it seem as though Tom is still going as Tom, and not Laura. So, apologies if I’m using the wrong name here. Apparently, the Against Me! frontwoman has been dealing with gender dysphoria for years. That may not come as a surprise to many of the band’s fans, who have been quick to point out the lyrics for “The Ocean”:

If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman
My mother once told me she would have named me Laura
I would grow up to be strong and beautiful like her
One day I’d find an honest man to make my husband

Congratulations on coming out, Tom! We hope you find the peace you’ve been looking for. You’ll be an inspiration to trans youth for years to come. We can’t wait to see the full story from Rolling Stone.

Oh, and mea culpa: I just made fun of my husband for subscribing to the print edition of Rolling Stone. Now I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Touché, Laura Jane Grace.

TRANSGENERATION is back on Sundance Channel! Tune in Tuesdays 10p. Four college students change more than their major.
