Buckle Up, Bible Belt! Welcome To The Gay South

Thought you knew everything there was to know about the South? Well, it’s not all cotillion parties and gratuitous displays of your Second Amendment rights, though both are pretty fabulous in their own right. The Nashville cast of GIRLS WHO LIKE BOYS WHO LIKE BOYS is about to show us a kinder, gentler (OK, sometimes bitchier) side to living out and proud in the South.

Truth is the South—like all good things repressed—has always had a gay element, a sort of open secret. Mint juleps didn’t invent themselves and those homes on display in Southern Living every month don’t just “happen” without the dexterous hand of some Dixieland dandy (and yes, I would like to make my porch the new living room). From Savannah, Georgia to Dallas, Texas you can always rely on the hospitality of a friendly stranger, whether you just want to make a new friend or desire something a bit more scandalous. Don’t take my word for it; stop by Scandals nightclub in Asheville, North Carolina. They have a drag show calendar that rivals Barracuda in New York.

It’s true, Jesus is pretty important to many people in the South and where there’s a Bible being thumped, there’s sure to be a moral code in tow. But gay culture has always been, and should always be, a shelter for the more fringe elements of our society. We’re welcoming to outsiders who just happen to have a more exciting, frenetic, and definitely chic, take on life. That may not always be understood at first, but we usually win you over.

Why wouldn’t gays be prevalent in the South? We love warm weather, swimming pools and any excuse to throw an outlandish party—especially on behalf of a worthy charity. We also pride ourselves on community, supporting each other, openness and a hot pair of boots. So break out your Sunday best, wipe off Saturday night’s glitter and join the Nashville cast as they shake a tail feather right in the buckle of the Bible Belt. It’s time to see how far loving your neighbor really goes in the twenty-first century.

An all new season of GIRLS WHO LIKE BOYS WHO LIKE BOYS is just around the corner. Tune into Sundance Channel on for the Season 2 premiere Friday, November 18th at 9 PM et/pt.
