The latest b-boy dance moves
I’ve long expressed my love of hip hop dance films. If you’ve ever wondered just who’s spending money to go see the movies in the STEP UP franchise, well, count me in that demographic. I like their combination of sick dance routines, hot dancing chicks and positive, uplifting messages about acceptance. I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise – and by fight I mean challenge to a dance off, obviously. I, for one, can’t wait for the fourth in the series, STEP UP 4EVER, which is slated for release sometime next year. I’m sure it’ll feature a lot of moves inspired by the dancing at events like the Notorious IBE (The Notorious International Breakdance Event) b-boy contest in Holland.
The video above by YAK Films (a well known chronicler of the current street dance culture) is from this year’s IBE and is a good sample of what’s happening right now in that world. A lot of these dancers and their styles seem to transcend dance as we know it and enter the realm of superhuman acrobatics and impossible flexibility. Some of their power moves seem almost better suited for an Olympic gymnastics competition. In other words, these guys are a lot better at dancing than you are. Sorry, that’s just a fact that I have to struggle with every day.
If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend the excellent documentary PLANET B-BOY that dives into some of the history of breakdancing and b-boy culture, and follows groups from around the world who meet for a big “battle of the year.”
