Weegee disguised as an ice cream man

I love this photo of Weegee. It was a revelation when I first came across Weegee (Arthur Fellig) when there was an exhibition of his photography at Brown University’s David Winton Bell Gallery. Although I couldn’t articulate why at the time, I distinctly recall the feeling of: Finally! Art and photography that for some reason deeply resonated with me! Later I’ve developed a firm feeling that he is the godfather of the 21st century urban blogger. As a self-taught photographer with no formal training, he roamed the underbelly of New York City to capture moments before anyone else (the fact that he “was the only New York newspaper reporter with a permit to have a portable police-band shortwave radio” and developed the photos in the trunk of his car helped).
