Vimeo of the Week: The Art of Drowning
In the above video, THE ART OF DROWNING, filmmaker and animator Diego Maclean brings to life the poem of the same name written by Billy Collins. Collins also reads the verse here on the film, a tale of what one sees when their life flashes before their eye while drowning. It also speaks to what one would like to see instead.
Collins, a former US poet laureate, wonders in his poem that rather than these flashes before we die wouldn’t it be great if instead we saw “a short animated film, a slide presentation?” Which is just what Maclean creates. Using black and white only Maclean’s movement and imagery matches Collins’ words perfectly. It’s a quick and thoughtful movie, notwithstanding it’s morbid subject.
