Book lovers unite! It's the NY Art Book Fair

If you’re one of the minions who’ve sworn an unholy alliance with the Kindle, if you’ve relegated your reading to the smooth, shiny surface of an iPad, read no further. But if you’re a member of the purer sect, those who relish the feel of a page between their thumb and forefinger, those who know that matte vs. luster is a matter of grave concern, those who know that all paper is not created equal (nor is it only available in 8.5″ x 11″) then rejoice, for the fifth annual New York Art Book Fair is upon us! Held this weekend at MoMA P.S.1 in Long Island City, the fair features no less than 200 “international press, booksellers, antiquarian dealers, artists and publishers” from around the world who’ve set up to hawk their wares. There are big names like ARTFORUM and Aperture, well-known indie rags like Bad Day, Cabinet and The Journal as well as those you’ve never heard of, like Pork Salad Press. Artist zines abound, like Pin-Up, “the magazine for architectural entertainment,” not to be confused with Pinups, the textless and arguably sexless magazine of male centerfolds. The exhibitors alone would be enough to fill the weekend, but you can bet on some performances, book signings and panels on everything from affordable independent publishing to how online publishing is changing the face of print (you didn’t really think you could avoid that topic, did you?).
