How to drag a pregnant woman across the West

Well, make that ‘pregnant.’ As in, strap on that belly and hop in the van, let’s shoot! Lisa and I just wrapped our micro-budget feature, SMALL, BEAUTIFULLY MOVING PARTS, starring Anna Margaret Hollyman (above), and it was an adventure to boot. We wrote an entry about our tech approach, and one about our micro micro approach (see Beauty; Beast and Movie in a Van) — to make it three we thought we’d share a few photos from the road. And also urge you to take a peek at the new Sundance Channel online series that spawned the feature — SPARKS, now up HERE, starring Sarah Hudnut as well as other actors who appear in our feature, Jackie of “The Good Wife” Mary Beth Peil and soon-to-appear on “Friends with Benefits” Andre Holland.

Okay, photos:

Wait, say it isn’t so. Well, it is. Anna Margaret Hollyman is, er, slating — calling the shot, clapping the sticks (while everyone else is in the van occupied with other jobs usually reserved for other crew). She was awesome!

On to interiors in Los Angeles. Our approach, production design: when you don’t have clearances for whatever is on the wall, use the director’s brother’s paintings! (Thanks, Alex Robinson.)

On to Vegas — here we flew in the amazing Susan Kelechi Watson, marveling to protagonist Sarah Sparks about the wonders of one’s aura.

By the time we got back to New York we felt years away from the road, our van, Vegas … and shooting on the streets of the Big Apple was familiar territory (see the SPARKS series for more). I most likely look slightly cranky here because I was also doing sound on the New York leg. Andre Holland featured above, with Lisa (l) and Annie (r). The ‘pregnant’ Anna Margaret Hollyman finally had one scene off! We’ll report more from post-production as it progresses.
