Finally! The summer jam of 2010 brought to you by Cee-Lo

Although summer is rapidly coming to a close (thanks August rains and chilly evenings for reminding us! Note sarcasm.), Cee-Lo released what might be the summer jam of 2010 that everyone is talking about. Since its release just last Friday, this song is suddenly everywhere.

The other half of Gnarls Barkley, Cee-Lo’s new single has a bluesy-funk sound fused with an addictive pop quality. The catchiness of the song isn’t surprising once I learned that Bruno Mars, the man behind B.o.B.’s hit “Nothin’ on You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire,” also wrote the hook for “Fuck You.” Yes, the lyrics are NSFW, but the content isn’t offensive at all. It captures a certain emotion and mood we’ve all experienced where sometimes you just want to say “F–K YOU!” The music video’s simple concept reminds me of Saul Bass’ iconic aesthetic. Kottke writes that the font, Champion Gothic used in Cee-Lo’s video was designed by type designer Tobias Frere-Jones’ (also brother of New Yorker’s music critic Sasha Frere-Jones) partner, Jonathan Hoefler.
