An Internet meme crossed into everyday real life when New York City’s beloved (note sarcasm) transit agency MTA updated a sign at a subway station at 14th Street and Sixth Avenue to reflect some service changes. The sign for train lines, F, V, and L was changed to F, M, and L. LOL!

Bloggers quickly noticed that the sign resembled what the the Times’ City Room euphemistically described as “a vaguely profane Internet meme” in which “the letters could be interpreted as an abbreviation that refers to a coarse self-denigration.” If you’ve been living off the grid in a cave for the past couple years, go to FML to familiarize yourself with this acronym. As one person commented, this story is “a first for MTA – truth in advertising.” Unfortunately, the MTA is changing the sign.
