HOTEL RWANDA on Tastemakers

HOTEL RWANDA (2004) is the true story of Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle), a Hutu hotel manager who took in hundreds of refugees, Hutu and Tutsi alike, during the 1994 Rwandan genocide in which one million people died over the course of only three months in one of the most abominable UN bungles in history. Despite the fact that Rwandans were abandoned by UN forces and left to fend for themselves once tourists and other foreigners were evacuated, Rusesabagina, armed with nothing but his own good will, risked his life time and again to save as many of his countrymen as possible. While the news that made headlines happened outside the gates of the Milles Collines hotel, the heart of this story lies in the strength of one man even after he is betrayed by his European colleagues and his family’s safety hangs in the balance. Directed by Terry George with a knockout performance from Cheadle, HOTEL RWANDA tells the gruesome story the rest of the world wanted to ignore.
