San Francisco in 1906

I, like many a gay in this great land of ours, spent some formative years in San Francisco. There I hobnobbed among the liberal elite and leather queens in equal measure. It truly is a diverse city. And also, as anyone who’s lived there will attest, San Francisco is a beautiful city. The hills. The ocean. The Victorian homes. And the trolleys.

I sat mesmerized when the video above landed in my inbox. The stretch of Market Street to the Ferry Building is still serviced by the trolley system. In this movie, shot in 1906, days before an earthquake would destroy much of the town, you see familiar images. The ferry building sits at the foot of Market. But the people, in their garb, and the horses and cars, are anything but modern.  It makes me long of SF. It’s a beautiful snapshot of the city’s rich history.
