An inconvenient font

I absolutely loved this blog post over at Typotheque on Al Gore and fonts. Turns out that when Mr. Gore was working on his follow-up to An Inconvenient Truth, titled Our Choice, he and his team decided to us the font Brioni created by the NYC-based designers mgmtdesign. Everything was fine except for one thing: the number 1. As designed, the #1 was causing confusion when paired with capital letters. And because the book relied heavily on scientific figures, and thus numbers, Al needed it changed. And mgmtdesign agreed. The result was so loved by all that the designers have kept the new version. So not only is Al Gore a former politician and a environmentalist, but he can now call himself a typographer as well.
