It’s less than a month away from the election, and things are looking serious for the McCain campaign. Barack Obama has opened a lead nationally and among several key battleground states, and shows no sign of slowing down. McCain has all but conceded Michigan, pulling out his campaign staff to focus on merely holding the states Bush won in ’04. The economy, already a vulnerability for McCain, continues to worsen, and Sarah Palin’s debate with Joe Biden failed to change the electoral dynamic the way Team Maverick hoped it would. If current trends continue, the McCa…

In magic, as well as politics, it’s called misdirection, a form of deception in which an audience’s attention is focused on one thing in order to distract it from another. Americans decisively favor Obama over McCain on who is better qualified to fix the economy, an issue that won’t be going away anytime soon. The McCain campaign knows that unless they change the subject immediately, they’ll be approaching Nov. 4 the way a bug approaches a windshield. Picking up on a New York Times piece this weekend, [] they’ve decided their best bet is Bill Ayers, the former co-founder of the radical 60’s militant group The Weathermen and current Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. To make this guilt-by-association work, linking Obama to domestic terrorism, the McCain campaign needs to engage in the political equivalent of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game [], because there’s just no “there” there.

In the McCain/Palin scenario, “palling around with a terrorist” means limited exposure serving on non-profit boards for education and poverty reform groups with no social contact outside of living in the same Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago. Not particularly radical stuff, until you add in all the breathless speculation of what the average, fevered rightwing brain imagines the two could have plotted together.

OBAMA: “Motion to approve funds for Cabrini-Green children’s center (holds up sign saying, “and secret Islamic madrassa”)…Motion seconded?

AYERS: “I second the motion……Muah-hah-hah-hah-hah! Ahem. Motion to strike that evil laugh from the minutes.”

OBAMA: “Motion seconded.”

If you don’t need facts or public records to back up your paranoid accusations, then, by God, Obama and Ayers are plotting right now to overthrow America.

But if you’re looking for something more concrete, the guilt-by-association doesn’t end with Ayers. It should disturb every American, especially given the current Wall Street crisis, that a candidate for President of the United States has been personally implicated in helping a corrupt banker bilk American citizens out of billions of dollars! [] What’s more, his running mate is sleeping with someone with recent ties to a traitorous group that advocates states seceding from the union! []

Corruption! Treason! Aieeeee!
