Science Barge at the New York City Piers

On May 4th, a Science Barge docked at one of the New York City piers to demonstrate hydroponic gardening techniques.

In a wonderful display of ingenuity and scientific prowess, New York Sun Works, a non-profit environmental organization, created “the Science Barge, a combination of an environmental education center and potential model for sustainable urban agriculture….” – New York Times. The Science Barge is intended to demonstrate how easy it is to grow hydroponic food, and the organization overtly makes the case that all of New York City’s rooftops could have gardens on them. Besides the fresh produce that would improve the diet of many New Yorkers, rooftop gardens would also lower heating and cooling costs by 20% or more.
